Poorna received a positive response from the critics based on the reviews. Neil Soans of The Times of India appreciated the film saying, "Returning to a directorial capacity after 16 years, Rahul Bose recognizes the beauty in simplicity and uses it to the film's advantage. Grounded performances combined with stirring music elevate this relatively straightforward tale, making it essential viewing not only for the young Indian woman, but for anyone looking to scale great heights against all odds." and gave it a rating of 4 stars out of 5.[9] Sarit Ray of The Hindustan Times praised the film saying, "Poorna shows you that incredible stories can be told simply. Bollywood can learn from that." and gave the film a rating of 4 stars out of 5.[10] Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express lauded the movie by saying, "Fairytales do come true and the story of Poorna Malavath is the proof. Her biopic, directed by Rahul bose, does justice to the extraordinary story of a 13-year-old tribal girl climbing Mt Everest." and gave the film a rating of 3 and a half stars out of 5.[11] Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV said that, "Poorna is a rare Hindi film that travels to the heart of rural landscape. But for Bose, doing the film was a no-brainer. This was partly because the number of Bollywood movies we see on sportswomen (Mary Kom, Dangal, and now Poorna), is very disproportionate to the many stories we should be seeing. But while Dangal and Mary Kom were also movies that became about winning for India, Poorna refreshingly stayed clear of this and focused on Malavath, the individual.
Prabhu (Arjun Ambati) falls head over heels in love with Sundari (Poorna), a village belle. He is an orphan and works for an IT company. Before you know, they get married after a laughably over-the-top rom-com segment. Sundari is extremely timid and looks paranoid in the city. When her husband loses his job and starts blaming her horoscope for his fate, Sundari is in for a nightmarish life. Since the caption of the movie is 'The ultimate decision of an innocent lady', we expect a twist in the tale as well.
Writer-director Kalyanji Gogana makes Sundari, who is merely demure, look like a damsel in distress. The outmoded characterization is made all the more insufferable by the fact that the men around her are consistently lecherous. Their creepiness is portrayed in the laziest manner conceivable. The scenes smack of the 1990s-era movies that sometimes bordered on the soft porn. A female character is made to say that the only way out for a jittery newly-wed woman to shed her inhibitions is to go for the first night ASAP. Is sex with the hubby the only way to chill out? In no time, the woman is made to say that her hubby doesn't have to watch skimpily clad models in 'item' songs now that he is married.
